Under Tray Battery Tray – Heavy Duty Adjustable

If you are serious about running a second battery properly, under the tray or chassis rail is where it belongs. This heavy duty under tray battery tray is designed to mount to the frame rail or under the ute body, keeping your auxiliary battery out of the engine bay and away from heat that kills it early.

Under the vehicle, ambient air temperature is typically 30–50°C lower than inside the engine bay when the vehicle is idling without forward motion. There is no radiant heat from exhaust manifolds, turbo or the engine block, and natural convection still works as hot air rises away from the tray. In simple terms, the battery runs cooler, charges more consistently and lasts longer.

The tray is laser cut from 3 mm steel and zinc coated for corrosion resistance. Internal width is three position adjustable at 174 mm, 184 mm and 193 mm, so it suits most common deep cycle AGM or lithium batteries in the 85–120 Ah range. A foam pad is supplied to hold the battery tight in the housing and prevent movement on corrugations or work sites.

With many late model vehicles having almost no spare room under the bonnet, this style of installation is now standard on purpose built traffic control and TMA trucks. If you look at modern vehicles, the auxiliary batteries are almost never under the bonnet anymore, they are mounted to the chassis or under the tray for exactly these reasons.

This tray gives you a secure, serviceable mounting point that makes it easier to run heavy cables back to the alternator, DC to DC charger or isolator. It also provides a neat platform to mount chargers, fuses and hardware directly to the tray so the whole system is contained and easy to access.

A second battery in this location is ideal for running traffic control equipment, arrow boards, VMS signs, work lights, inverters, fridges and other power draining accessories without compromising the starting battery. For engine bay mounting, you would need heat shielding, ventilation and high temperature batteries just to approach the same life you get from a cooler under tray installation.
